Feeling like a Friday night in would suit us better we dragged ourselves out for a night at Audio, Brighton for Maxxi Broadcast‘s Crazy P live PA. Crazy P have been around for years and changed their name from Crazy Penis. We got into the club quite early with the other friends of DJs but it didn’t fill up as much as it deserved. I was impressed by some of the mash-up/remixes I heard even though I prefer my house tougher. Crazy P’s singer had a great voice reminding me of Roisin Murphy though like a lot of MCs she kept reminding us it was ‘Friday night’, ‘we’re at the seaside’ and ‘here to have a good time’. Yeah, I know love!

After a few random conversations with strangers (I remember one guy going on about Japanese knotweed then he thought it was the Effiel Tower in the Planet of the Apes), the club main lights switched on with 20 minutes to go, very off-putting when dancing. When it did close we somehow managed to invite Crazy P back to Paul’s Disco Dungeon. The only thing was that about another 30 odd hangers on decided to follow us as well.

Paul didn’t seem too bothered, only the lack of booze was a worry whereas my main concern was getting some chips as I was starving. The majority of the hangers-on were interesting people even though a couple of them had no connection to anyone. Nice to meet Gus as well who I discovered had a Norfolk upbringing.

The draw of the music downstairs managed to pull the party punters and about 5 DJs including Crazy P took turns to play a handful at a time. Crazy P left a little later, only to kip at the My Hotel over the road. As he left I asked why he dropped the ‘enis’ from Crazy P. He said ‘back then they were two guys with a bag of weed. Now the name’s not important and there’s 5 of us’. By about 5:30am, bed was calling so left the majority to it.

The menu was scripted by Kerry on PowerPoint whilst I injected some themed style of using The Usual Suspects which got us in trouble with Kerry’s work. It wasn’t the cock in cocktail but the quote within the emailed document of ‘Gimme the fuckin keys you fuckin cocksucker mutha fucka arrghhh!’. Something like foul, non-business language with sexual explicit under-tones. Ooops!

The night itself was another mad rush of fast drinking with Keyser Soze’s canopes going down well and the following drinks being asked again:

Lady Killer: Gin(1), Apricot Brandy(3/4), Cointreau(3/4), Passion Fruit(2) and Pineapple Juice(2)
Jade: Midori (1/4), Blue Ciracao(1/4), Champagne(top-up), Angostura Bitters (dash) and Lime (1/4)

The video clip below is an interesting reveal of the new film’s lightcycle design. As the press and fans enter the special room you get to see the draft drawings in the corridor then the main room shows a full sized lightcycle. Make sure you listen to the video camera owner getting very excited when he see the real bike.

Another strange web discovery is this video of Thomas Bangalter making a surprise guest slot DJing three records with Busy P in LA – just him without the Daft Punk helmet. The video is jumpy but clear quality and the sound chaotic with the crowd wetting themselves. He’s looking very thin (he’s in the middle with brown sunglasses)!

When the taxi arrived for us at around 11:40am we bundled out without realising the front door key had been left in the lock. The last time this happened it cost me about £90 to get a locksmith out who used a type of bar. I’m not going to give away how I did it but got back into the house without another expensive call-out. Kerry and Emma went without us in the taxi but rang 10 minutes later saying the parade had blocked all traffic and there was no way of crossing the road in the North Laines. This left James and I to cycle down and pick up the bags and cake. I’d never seen so many people in pink and had to fight against the flow missing the parade.

We got to Kev and Karol’s as it started to rain which delayed our plan to visit the festival site and put a dampner on everyone’s spirits. It took another two and a bit hours to sort ourselves out waiting for the rain to stop. Grabbed the next bus nicely decorated in rainbow colours and got onto the site looking for the Callabash tent for some decent music. No decent music so tried the carousel for some elevated swinging fun. It certainly put a smile on my face. Later we tried getting into the main tent looking for a place to dance and to secure a dry place in case it rained. Too late, as the heavens opened with the heaviest rain yet. The entrance to the tent was rammed and we all knew it was time to go.

Getting a bus back into town was also everyone else’s plan it seemed and buses filled up quickly as people pushed to get out of the downpour. Back at Kev and Karol’s all we could do was start drinking and forget about the outside world.

After a lot of tasty food and drink we all moved over to Paul’s disco dungeon for some sweaty exercise. I thought I might have peaked too early with the intake but managed to pull off one of the best sets I’ve done in ages. I’ve played almost all the tunes before but I must be getting used to the Virtual DJ software and tweeking the sound effects at the right time. Kev’s laptop didn’t feel like partying so it left Paul to do a mammoth 6 hour set.

There were five rounds with a current affairs/news for the first, a topic round on Heroes, a picture round to identify famous people when they were children, a music round (a bonus round that didn’t count towards the main points and a bottle of wine as the prize) and a multiple choice. We climbed the ranks through the rounds and playing the joker on the picture round we were 2 or 3 points off the leader. We somehow managed to win the music round for some bad wine to add to our hangovers including latecomer Julian who was already pretty half-cut and helped the other teams shouting out the answers (he did convince the others that I was right on a couple of questions so he did help in the end).

We honestly didn’t think the last round was a good score until the quizmaster called us out as winners and the pot of cash was ours! Hopefully, us winning all prizes hasn’t put off the competition or banned us from the next time.

The film has its own website which interestingly is a co.uk site and not a co.nz. The cover looks slightly dodgy as well to be a little suspicious of its credibility. There’s a trailer to view as well but I haven’t found any reviews to say whether its any good or not. The website quotes Talksport Magazine review “as funny as Shaun of the Dead, more horrific than Severance”. I’ve never heard of TalkSport but it looks like a Nuts clone for sport billys.
